Building a Warm Shelter at the Root of a Giant Tree

Nestled where the ancient tree’s massive roots erupt from the earth like stone, we built our warm shelter. We wove supple branches between the gnarled arches, forming walls. Thick layers of dry ferns and moss, gathered from the sun-dappled forest floor, became our insulation, packed tightly against the woven frame. Inside the root-cradled space, we laid a bed of soft pine boughs. A small, carefully tended fire in a ring of stones outside the entrance sent gentle heat radiating through the earth and roots, while the tree’s immense trunk shielded us from the wind. Its deep roots held the warmth close, making our tiny haven cozy against the gathering dusk.
