Select a protected location beneath dense evergreen branches or a natural snowdrift. Dig downward into deep snow to construct a quinzhee or snow cave—snow insulates remarkably well. Keep the entrance tunnel low and the sleeping platform higher, trapping warm air inside. Line walls with evergreen boughs for added insulation and moisture barrier. Ensure a small ventilation hole to prevent carbon dioxide buildup. Block the entrance with a backpack or snow block after entering. Body heat will gradually warm the interior several degrees above outside temperatures. Stay dry, minimize exertion during construction, and never sleep directly on snow. This hidden refuge could mean survival when temperatures plummet dangerously.
