When blizzard winds howl, a snow shelter saves lives. Start by piling loose snow into a dome three feet thick, letting it sinter (harden) for an hour. Then, carve a small entrance tunnel below the main chamber—cold air sinks, trapping warmth inside. Hollow out the interior carefully, leaving walls at least one foot thick for insulation. Smooth the ceiling to prevent dripping. Block the entrance with a backpack or snow block. Body heat will raise the interior 20–30°F above outside temperatures. This quinzhee or snow cave shields you from wind chill and buys critical time until the storm passes and rescue arrives.
